Svetlozar Donchev urgently needs help! Svetlozar Donchev is one of the few people in Bulgaria suffering from Buerger’s Disease. His pain and health problems began in 2019, triggered by severe stress following a difficult divorce for him and his two young children. Since then, he has been in a constant battle to save his limbs. The situation is further complicated by the fact that life-saving therapy is not covered by the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). This leaves him unable to afford not only expensive medications but also basic needs such as food, clothing, and school supplies for his children. Simeon Slavchev, a friend of Svetlozar and member of the Facebook group “Dads of Sofia,” reached out to us. He and the other “dads” have been helping Svetlozar and his children for years by organizing fundraising campaigns in the media and on social networks. Simeon described Svetlozar’s severe health and financial situation and urged anyone who can help to support him and his family during this critical time. This rare disease has drastically changed Svetlozar’s life, making him incapable of work with 91% permanent reduced work capacity, as determined by the medical commission (TELK). Before the diagnosis, Svetlozar had a stable job and supported his two children, whom he raises alone after the divorce. Over the years, despite continuous battles with the disease, he lost a significant number of fingers and toes. At the end of last week, his health deteriorated sharply, requiring emergency hospitalization and amputation of his right foot. The next two months are crucial, as the progression of his disease will determine whether amputation of the other foot will also be necessary. Svetlozar shared his story with us through tears, describing his current despair and helplessness. For his recovery after the latest amputation and overall treatment and rehabilitation during this critical two-month period, approximately 10,000 BGN is required — an amount he does not have. Meanwhile, for rent, utilities, food, and life-sustaining medications, he needs over 2,500 BGN per month, while Svetlozar and his children survive only on his disability pension and child allowances totaling 980 BGN. Thanks to the members of the Facebook group, funds have repeatedly been raised for medicines, clothing, food, and covering monthly rent and bills. However, due to continuous amputations and Svetlozar’s inability to work, his life and that of his two children have now exceeded the edge of survival.
