Zhivko is 36 years old and suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He has dreams like any healthy person – he has completed higher education, loves rap music, writes lyrics, and sings. For years, Zhivko has been “trapped” in his own home, and his only connection to the world is through his computer. His health is better than most people with the same diagnosis thanks to daily care, including rehabilitation, nutritious food, vitamins, and supplements. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a progressive genetic disease affecting skeletal muscles, and in later stages – the heart and lungs. The first symptoms appear around age five, with progressive muscle weakness spreading across the body, and most patients are in a wheelchair before the age of 12. Zhivko and his family have been fighting this disease for nearly 30 years. His parents do everything possible to slow its progression, including physiotherapy, medications, and a special diet. A few years ago, Zhivko was offered an experimental stem cell treatment in Turkey, which could give him a chance for a longer and more independent life, but the treatment could not be carried out due to severe anemia. Today, the only way to slow the disease is specialized physiotherapy and rehabilitation, a special diet, and supplements, which cost approximately 300–400 BGN per week.
