The monastery “Sts. Peter and Paul” is the only active women’s Orthodox monastery in Northeastern Bulgaria, known to pilgrims as the Zlatarski Monastery, due to its proximity to the village of Zlatar near Shumen. Its history dates back to the time of the First Bulgarian Empire and it is famous for its healing spring, whose water is believed to help with rheumatism, eczema, and other ailments. In the 14th century, the monastery was destroyed following Bulgaria’s fall under Ottoman rule and was restored with the help of people from neighboring villages in 1937. It consists of an old residential building for the nuns and a small but very beautiful and well-maintained church, whose façade is painted with the images of the holy apostles Peter and Paul. Twenty years ago, construction of a new monastery building began, but it remains unfinished and has already started to deteriorate. A few meters from the church, there is an active landslide, which has been stabilized with the help of the Ministry of State Policy on Disasters, Accidents, and Fires, but despite the retaining wall, the area remains unstable. Because of the landslide, the church walls have cracked and the temple needs repair. The residential building for the nuns must be reinforced and secured, as it is very old and at risk of collapsing if the landslide becomes active. The monastery does not have a water supply system, and its residents get water from nearby village fountains. The “Lazar Ivilinov Todorov” Foundation has arranged for water to be delivered to the monastery by water truck, but this is a temporary and insufficient solution. We hope that, together, we can solve this problem. We sincerely thank all of you for your generosity and hope that together we can help this monastic community survive.
